Air-conditioning at 16 degrees and it still felt like 35 degrees inside my office. I had just started this job, I was overworking myself, needed to make my quota for the month.
Working at Slope Travel Agency was stressful, we were all very competitive. It was the biggest travel agency in West Africa and no one wanted to loose their job.
I got up from my desk, “I should get some water before I melt”. I said to myself..
Walking to the cafeteria, i decided to stop by and say hello to Marcia, she was my only friend at the company… Well truth be told, Marcia was everyone’s friend, sweet lady in her 60s and she’s the oldest staff in the company, been with the company since inception.
“Hello Marcia”- I said, facing her as a couple exited the elevator. They were walking towards Marcia. I could tell they were newlyweds or about to wed. This was my opportunity.
“I’ll take care of it” – I said to Marcia and quickly turned around.
“Hello there and congratulations on your wedding” – I said
They both smiled and the lady responded ” Wedding is in 2 weeks”
Woww, I said, genuinely excited, I’m a soft sell with couples because I unlike my other colleagues really do love weddings.
“So where will you be honeymooning, Bali, Seychelles, BORDEAUX, Paris, Greece, I could show you a brochure if you’d please come with me” I said, flashing my warmest smile.
We went to my office and I showed them breath taking photos,
“BORDEAUX wine capital of the world, has the most graceful urban sights in France, you’ll see the miroir-d’eau reflecting the splendid Palais-de-la-Bourse you will love your stay here and you can even move to Paris after a week here… Love and wine, what could be better.” I was on a roll, I needed to sell this…
Showed them more pictures, my hands making grandiose moves, I sold yachts, ship cruises, wine tasting, great food, sightseeing, shopping and above all love… This is what sets me apart. I don’t just sell flight tickets and cruise tickets… It was the presentation that always nailed it for me… They were in love…
I could see it, after a bit of negotiation, questions and small talk, at the end BORDEAUX it was….
