I should go take a drag, i thought to myself… I have been on call since yesterday evening and it was beginning to tell on me.
Multiple emergency cases, children wailing, i was just happy I didn’t loose any of my patients.
I walked towards the door that led to the smokers bay as we called it at Grace Medical. “Doctor Ada to A&E, Doctor Ada to A&E”
The hospital announcer called.
I quickly ran to the Accident and Emergency ward, half thinking when my shift would end and why I didnt have that smoke first.
I got into A&E and there was a young boy probably 18years old.
“Talk to me” – I said to the nurse on call
“patient came in with severe redness of the left eye, he wouldn’t let us examine it, he has been holding onto it” – She said
I looked at his file, his name was Ben.
“hi Ben, my name is Doctor Ada, I’m here to help you” – I said
“it hurts, it’s burning me” – He said, tears free flowing down his face.
“I have to take a look at it ok” – I said, quickly putting on a glove.
He took his hands away and i proceeded with my diagnosis, a quick dilated fundus examination showed that he had a severe IRIDOCYCLITIS a subtype of uveitis, an eye infection. I administered prednisone acetate eyedrops to help with the redness and swelling. He was calmer now and laid down to rest..
I filled his file with the remainder of his treatment and passed it to the nurse.
I needed to rest., it had been a long night….
