Nobody OWES YOU SHIT! Now that I have made you aware of this important fact, let’s proceed. Many adults these days go around, expecting others, in particular their parents, family members or friends to do something for them or give them money.
These individuals often grow up to be adults who are narcissistic, self-centered, self-absorbed and spoiled. They feel entitled to have a huge income or a fancy house and car simply because. Most often they feel entitled for success, recognition or accomplishments without having the discipline to work hard and make the right sacrifices.
They want everything yesterday and have this need for overnight success or constant gratification. People with entitlement mentality feel they are either ‘special’ or ‘privileged’ to automatically earn what others earn through years and years of hard work, sacrifice and self-discipline. If you have an entitlement persona, you need to realise that it will ruin your life if you continue this way.
Having a sense of entitlement makes you paranoid, causes low self esteem, makes you incompetent, blinds you from the truth and ruins your chances of communicating your wants and desires in a diplomatic and calm manner. Having a wrong sense of entitlement will cause conflicts for you both personally and professionally because nobody wants a person that places him/herself above everyone and because of this trait, you will lose opportunities and possibilities, Life is about give and take, not take and take. Example: “I have been here for twenty years- I should be considered for a promotion.” (entitlement statement) “I have been here for twenty years and I am looking for the next step in my career- what can I improve to get to the next level?” (diplomatic statement)
Just because you have been somewhere for a long time does not entitle you to a promotion; Have you furthered your education? Are you keeping abreast of new trends in your industry? Have you taken on projects or new roles to learn new skill sets? If the answer is no, you have a lot to improve upon before you can request a promotion.
