For thousands of years, pennis objects have been used symbolically as a means to boost fertility and ward off evil spirits – but their use as sexual aids has a long history, too. A 28,000-year-old dildo found in Germany recently, for example, is quoted as being the oldest known ‘sex toy’ ever found.
While dildos made from stone, wood, leather and even camel dung have all be found during excavations, or referenced throughout historical text and images. This dildo is so far the oldest found, it made me wonder what the woman (or man) was thinking & feeling at that time. Was she some lonely housewife, whose husband always left her to go drink and party with his friends at the local bar or a woman married to a man she didn’t love and who couldn’t fuck her properly or wait for her to orgasm or was the creator a closeted gay who enjoyed the feeling of hard rock up his ass.
The reason I don’t think this toy was made by a man is because homosexuality wasn’t frowned upon in ancient times, there were conditions attached to it, but it wasn’t entirely frowned upon but lesbianism was outrightly banned. Penetration was viewed as a man’s job and women back then were expected to be submissive and as such weren’t allowed to do a man’s job.
Looking at this make-shift dildo, I think back to an article I read during my gender and sexuality course and I remember how in ancient Greece, traders in the city of Miletus made and sold objects called ‘olisbos’, intended to help wives achieve sexual penetration while their husbands were away. The dildos were also used in Renaissance Italy, and were typically made of leather and used with olive oil for lubrication; however, they were said to be painful to use and their popularity waned.
Just a fun fact: The term dildo was first coined in around 1400 AD and originated from the Latin for ‘dilatare’, which means ‘open wide’, and the Italian for delight, which translates as ‘diletto.’ Anyways, What do you think pushed this ancestor to create the first sex toy?
