She lays there, cowered in silence, fear digging its nails inside her flesh, tearing and nibbling away at her sanity.
“Hello, hello” – she says into the receiver. “you have one minute remaining”, the operator’s voice replied.
“please help, please help me, he’s here again, my nightmare has returned” – she said quickly and ended the call, scurrying to hide the phone underneath the pile of dirty sheets that posed as her bed.
You could hear the tap, tap, tap on the walls, the thud of each footstep as it hits the floor, a rat ran across the room hitting the plates scattered on the floor. Her eyes darted; quickly to the rat, then to the door as the keys rattled behind the door.
“please, please, I’m begging you please, let me go please” – she kicked and screamed as he held her by the hair dragging her out of the room. Her hands held the sides of the door, legs flailing wildly, her screams shattering the silence of the desert, he hit her on the face and laughed as the blood trickled down, he did it again and again just for the sheer depravity of it. His laughs got louder as her screams reduced to a sob. He had broken her again, just as he’d always done. She dropped her hands to the side, preparing her mind for what’s to come, her fighting was useless, her screams are not going to be heard here same way it wasn’t heard in her home country, she resigned to fate as the thought of the life she left in Nigeria, a country that failed her woefully enclaved her… EVE
